Welcome to The Joker & the Thief, a cozy wee pub on Elm Row. We serve great booze in a warm and welcoming environment. It really is a simple as that.
We take great pride in the quality of the products we sell, and are proud to say this has resulted in our consistent inclusion in CAMRA’s Real Ale Quality Accreditation scheme. We place a strong emphasis on supporting local businesses and stocking local products so expect a varied and changing selection alongside the staples.
We serve fresh pizza throughout the night direct from our friends at Origano and will strive to cater to all dietary requirements.
We also host a regular, and free to enter, pub quiz led by the legendary Dr Paul each Wednesday evening at 6pm. Aside from being a brilliant evening, there’s a booze voucher and a rollover cash jackpot to be won!
If you’d like some mind-blowing tricks with your pint we have weekly close up magic every Thursday courtesy of our resident magician Tim Licata. During the Edinburgh Festival you can catch him every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday!
We do take reservations for large and small groups and can accommodate smaller events (please see our FAQ page for more information).

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I reserve multiple tables?
We can accept bookings for group sizes between 2 and 20 people and will strive to accommodate larger groups wherever possible.
Do I need to book a table for the quiz?
While its not a requirement, we do recommend booking as the quiz nights can get very busy.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes! We welcome our canine friends and even have a few regular pooches, though we do ask that dogs are kept on a lead at all times.
Are under-18s allowed in?
Unfortunately not. Due to our license we can only have over-18s in the pub.
Can I customise my pizza?
While our friends at Orgiano can accommodate changes due to dietary requirements with gluten-free and vegan options, they will not add or remove toppings due to preference.
How long do the pizzas take to arrive?
Waiting times tend to vary from night to night, though bar staff will always let you know if the wait is likely to be longer than an hour. We can never guarantee service by a particular time so please plan accordingly.
How does the magic work on Thursdays?
We appreciate not everyone likes to be approached when they’re having a drink so we have an ‘opt-in’ system for Tim’s magic. You can make it known you would like to see some tricks, or you can choose not to (though we would highly recommend seeing some tricks).
